The Virginia counties list, reader questions

Why are cities listed beside counties?

Virginia has 38 independent cities that sit outside any county, so each gets its own page; 38 city pages are in this list.

Where do the ramps on a locality page come from?

The DWR Boating Access Locations layer and the DWR Fishing Piers layer.

Is trout stocking shown by locality?

Yes, the DWR stocking schedule lists the county or city for each release, so each page shows its own dates.

Which digest rules show on a locality page?

Exceptions for the lakes and rivers inside it, and the special regulation trout waters the digest places there.

Is the county seat on each page?

Yes for counties, with 2020 Census counts; an independent city is its own seat.

Is a DWR region named?

Only the region number the DWR layers give the locality’s own lakes, ramps and piers; places with none print no number.

Why is a locality not linked yet?

That locality page sits in the Virginia release line and becomes a link once it goes live.

Which localities touch salt water?

Those along the Chesapeake Bay, its tidal rivers and the Atlantic side of the Eastern Shore, with tidal ramps and NOAA stations listed.
