Empire State common carp: the short version
New York counts common carp among its freshwater species; the DEC limit tables mention it across no table of its own.
DEC records a 50 lb 6 oz catch from Tomhannock Reservoir, set in 1995, as the mark to beat. The DEC lake and stream lists put it on 91 pages here.
DEC’s beginner guide gives the usual size as 18-28 in./ grow to 40 in. During spawning season, they are often seen thrashing about close to the surface, with their bodies partially exposed. 24-40 in. In gravel and Fish, February-April All except A mud bottoms, crayfish and American Eel or hiding under insect larvae rocks Fish fact: After spending 5-20 years in freshwater rivers and streams, American eels swim to the Sargasso Sea (near the Bahamas) to spawn. The eggs drift back to the coast with ocean currents and hatch along the way. The transparent hatchlings, called glass eels, swim by the millions up freshwater rivers and streams where they’ll feed and grow until they reach sexual maturity.
Size note and fact from the DEC I FISH NY beginner guide (I FISH NY Beginners' Guide to Freshwater Fishing, Chapter 1 Fishes of New York (DEC, 2016)).
